Windansea Beach is more than a beautiful stretch of coastline. It is a place rich in surfing history, culture, memories, and community—and a place that has endured countless challenges over the decades. From vandalism and development threats to erosion and the relentless forces of nature, Windansea has repeatedly faced challenges that could have permanently changed its character.

A History of Challenges
Nature has been an equally powerful force. Coastal erosion, weather, and years of exposure have taken their toll on the beach and its historic structures. The famous surfer’s shack itself has been destroyed by nature not once, but twice.

And the threats haven’t always come from nature.

When plans threatened to commercialize Windansea with bathrooms and showers, local residents fought back. The “Ban the Can” movement became a symbol of the community’s determination to preserve the unique character of Windansea Beach.

Today, the possibility of coastal development remains an ongoing concern, while something as simple as keeping the beach clean is an endless task.

Preserving Windansea Takes More Than Passion
Behind every successful preservation project are people willing to invest their time, energy, expertise—and money.

Friends of Windansea and La Jolla Parks and Beaches work to address everything from public safety and erosion to planning, design, permitting, construction, maintenance, and navigating the often complicated bureaucratic process required to protect and improve this special place. It doesn’t happen overnight, and it doesn’t happen without financial support.

Donations—from $10 to hundreds of dollars—have played an important role in preserving, restoring, and enhancing the natural character and beauty of Windansea Beach.

Your Donations Make a Difference
Generous contributions have helped make improvements to the Windansea parking area, helping address erosion while providing safer and easier access for visitors. Donations have also helped restore, rebuild, and maintain the historic Windansea surfer’s shack—preserving one of the most recognizable symbols of San Diego’s surfing heritage.

And the work continues.

Future support will help control erosion and work toward rebuilding the historic belvedere destroyed by vandals in 1982.

It is also remarkable to see what the community has already accomplished, including the construction and maintenance of five beach-access stairways. These may seem like individual projects, but together they help protect the character, history, accessibility, and natural beauty of Windansea Beach.

Windansea’s Future Depends on All of Us
Windansea Beach has survived because generations of people have cared enough to stand up for it.

It remains a symbol of resilience—a place where surfing history, natural beauty, and community spirit come together.
