Windansea Parking Lot Pathway Gets a Long Awaited Makeover

With the support of La Jolla Parks and Beaches, last Sunday, a dedicated group of volunteers came together to give the well-worn pathway at the Windansea Parking Lot a long awaited makeover. Leading the effort were five committed members of Friends of Windansea: Mark Feighan (pictured), Karl Luber, Adam Bloomberg, Jim Neri, Melinda Merryweather, and Alan Connin from GFG Landscape. They were joined by four City of San Diego Park Rangers, including Joel Prospero (also pictured), who lent their hands and expertise to help complete the project.

Over time, the pathway had suffered from significant erosion due to constant foot traffic and coastal weather conditions. To address this, the team used an innovative material known as Granitecrete, blending it into the existing decomposed granite pathway. This eco-friendly mix combines the strength and durability of concrete with the permeability of natural soil, resulting in a surface that looks and feels like a native dirt path but is much more resilient to wear and erosion.

The outcome is a beautifully restored pathway that retains its natural, beachside aesthetic while providing improved stability and longevity for visitors. This upgrade ensures safer, easier access for beachgoers while helping to protect the surrounding environment from further degradation.

This pathway restoration is just one of many initiatives undertaken by Friends of Windansea as part of their ongoing commitment to care for and enhance one of La Jolla’s most beloved coastal spots. All of these projects — including this latest improvement — are made possible through the generosity of private, tax-deductible donations contributed to La Jolla Parks & Beaches, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Without the continued support of community members, businesses, and beach lovers alike, none of this important preservation work would be possible.

Thanks to the collaborative spirit of volunteers, park staff, and generous donors, Windansea Beach remains a beautiful, accessible, and safe gathering place for locals and visitors to enjoy. The freshly restored pathway is a testament to what can be accomplished when a community comes together with a shared goal of preserving and protecting the natural treasures we all cherish.

Every project — including this pathway restoration — is funded entirely through private, tax-deductible donations made to La Jolla Parks & Beaches, Inc., a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
